Product Details

A natural Black Tourmaline specimen on feldspar matrix from the Zomba District of southern Malawi — a locality celebrated among mineral collectors for the quality and diversity of its alkaline pegmatite specimens.

Geological profile:

The tourmaline in this specimen is schorl — the iron-rich, black member of the tourmaline group — crystallised within the alkaline pegmatites of the Chilwa Alkaline Province. These pegmatites, hosted within nepheline syenite and granitic syenite intrusions of the Zomba Plateau, provide the precise geochemical conditions — particularly boron and iron availability — for schorl to form as well-defined prismatic crystals with the characteristic striated faces and vitreous to sub-metallic lustre the species is known for. The feldspar matrix — microcline or orthoclase — serves as the primary host mineral, its pale cream to white colouration creating sharp visual contrast against the jet-black tourmaline prisms.

Specimen highlights:

  • Black tourmaline crystals displaying prismatic habit with clearly visible vertical striations — a diagnostic feature of natural tourmaline
  • Feldspar matrix providing structural display context and strong colour contrast
  • Completely natural — no treatments, polishing, or enhancement

Why collectors value Zomba Tourmaline on Feldspar:

  • The Zomba Plateau pegmatites are part of the same alkaline complex that produces Mount Malosa's world-class aegirine — material from this geological province carries established collector recognition and provenance credibility
  • Schorl from alkaline pegmatite environments displays crystal definition and lustre that distinguishes it from the massive, poorly formed tourmaline commonly found in granitic pegmatites elsewhere
  • The tourmaline-feldspar combination preserves the original mineralogical relationship as it formed within the pegmatite — a geological context piece, not an isolated crystal
  • A strong companion specimen for collectors already holding Malosa aegirine or Zomba smoky quartz, building a locality suite from one of Southern Africa's most mineralogically productive alkaline complexes
